George Mraz was a greatly in-demand bassist for straight-ahead dates ever since he emigrated to the United States in 1968. He studied bass at the Prague Conservatory as well as Berklee and toured with Oscar Peterson (1970-1972). After moving to New York, Mraz became a member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (1973-1976), worked with Stan Getz (1974-1975)

He also has led his own quartet with pianist Richie Beirach, drummer Billy Hart and the lyrically riveting tenor man Rich Perry as well as a trio without piano with Perry and Joey Baron and another quartet, adding David Hazeltine on piano.

George's last project was a trio with pianist Camilla Mraz and drummer Anthony Pincotti.

Thorughout his career Mraz recorded and worked with with Joe Henderson, Hank Jones, Directions In Music with Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano and Hank Jones Quartet, Manhattan Trinity, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Roland Hanna, Hank Jones, Charles Mingus, NYJQ, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, Toshiko Akioshi, Kenny Drew, Barry Harris, Richie Beirach, Jimmy Smith, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Art Pepper, Phil Woods, Grover Washington Jr., Archie Shepp, Dave Leibman, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Kenny Burrell, Larry Coryell, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker and many others.

His albums as a leader include: "Catching Up" on Alfa Records Jazz", My Foolish Heart, Bottom Lines, Duke’s Place and Morava, all on Milestone Records. Other releases include The George Maraz Quartet Jazz at Prague Castle on Multisonic (2012) and The George Mraz and David Hazeltine Trio Your Story on Cube-Metier.

In 2009, George received the Czech Republic Lifetime Achievement Award.

Among George’s last wishes was that he be remembered by you for what and who he was, how YOU personally remember him in your hearts, and that no memorial or public tribute be organized to honor him.
